ADVENTURE

Amazon Canopy Adventure A private journey through the rainforest treetops

A sanctuary in the sky, deep in the Peruvian Amazon

Rising approximately 34 metres above the forest floor, the Alta Sanctuary Treehouse offers an extraordinary way to experience the Amazon from within its living canopy. Built around two magnificent intertwined trees, it provides breathtaking 360-degree views across one of the rainforest’s most remote and biodiverse landscapes.

Here, wilderness and comfort exist in harmony. Guests awaken to the calls of macaws and monkeys, watch the forest come alive with the first light of day and enjoy the privacy of an elevated retreat equipped with a comfortable bed, private bathroom with hot water, air conditioning and solar-powered electricity.

From its privileged position above the forest, the Treehouse offers exceptional opportunities to observe tropical birds and other wildlife that are often difficult to see from the ground. Every sunrise, sunset and sound becomes part of an intimate connection with the rainforest.

More than an exceptional place to stay, Alta Sanctuary represents a commitment to protecting the Amazon. Every visit supports conservation efforts in the Las Piedras region, transforming an unforgettable journey into a meaningful contribution to the future of the rainforest.

Program Overview

This private four-day journey invites guests to discover the Amazon from the forest floor, the river and the rainforest canopy. Accompanied by an expert naturalist guide, travellers will explore pristine forest trails, observe macaws at a clay lick, navigate the Las Piedras River and learn about the conservation initiatives protecting this extraordinary region.

Each experience is personalised according to the guests’ interests, physical condition and preferred pace. Activities may also be adapted to weather, river levels and the natural rhythms of the rainforest.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 – Journey into the Amazon

Upon arrival on a morning flight at Puerto Maldonado Airport, you will be welcomed by our representative and begin your private journey to Alta Sanctuary. Travel by vehicle through the Amazonian countryside before continuing by motorised boat along the Las Piedras River. The approximately four-hour journey is part of the experience, offering your first views of the rainforest and opportunities to observe tropical birds and wildlife along the riverbanks. Upon arrival at Alta Sanctuary, enjoy a refreshing welcome drink and meet the team who will accompany you during your stay. After a brief orientation, settle into the spectacular Treehouse and take some time to appreciate the panoramic views over the Amazon canopy. Later in the afternoon, join your private guide for a gentle introductory walk along the surrounding forest trails. Learn about the rainforest ecosystem while searching for monkeys, tropical birds, insects and other wildlife. Return to the Treehouse for dinner and spend your first night surrounded by the extraordinary sounds of the Amazon.

Day 2 – Macaws and Rainforest Exploration

After breakfast, cross the Las Piedras River to visit the nearby macaw clay lick. From a discreet observation hide, watch as colourful macaws, parrots and parakeets gather along the mineral-rich riverbank. This remarkable natural event provides excellent opportunities for birdwatching and nature photography. Your guide will explain the ecological importance of clay licks and help you identify the different species observed. Return to Alta Sanctuary for lunch, followed by time to rest and enjoy the views from the Treehouse. In the afternoon, explore one of the surrounding rainforest trails with your private guide. Depending on your interests, the walk may focus on wildlife observation, medicinal plants, ancient trees, rainforest ecology or nature photography. After dinner, venture into the forest on a guided night walk. Equipped with a flashlight and accompanied by your guide, search for tree frogs, insects, reptiles, nocturnal birds and other creatures that become active after sunset.

Day 3 – River Adventure and Conservation

Begin the day with an early-morning boat ride along the Las Piedras River. Enjoy coffee or tea as the first light appears over the forest and listen as the Amazon awakens around you. The peaceful morning hours offer excellent possibilities for observing macaws, toucans, kingfishers, monkeys, capybaras and other wildlife along the riverbanks. After breakfast, choose an adventure according to the season, river levels and your personal interests. Options may include a guided waterfall hike, stream exploration or packrafting through the river and quiet Amazonian waterways. After lunch, discover the conservation work being carried out in the Las Piedras region. Learn about the challenges facing the rainforest and the efforts made to protect this important biological corridor, its forests and wildlife. Return to the Treehouse in time to enjoy the sunset above the canopy. After dinner, you may join a nighttime boat excursion in search of caimans and other nocturnal wildlife along the riverbanks.

Day 4 – Farewell to the Rainforest

Wake up for one final sunrise above the Amazon canopy and enjoy breakfast surrounded by the sights and sounds of the forest. After breakfast, begin the return journey by motorised boat along the Las Piedras River, followed by a private vehicle transfer to Puerto Maldonado. Upon arrival in the city, you will be taken to Puerto Maldonado Airport to board one of the latest available afternoon flights. Packrafting, tree climbing and other specialised activities are subject to environmental conditions and the availability of qualified guides.

Alta Sanctuary is located in a remote natural environment. For this reason, comprehensive travel insurance covering medical assistance, trip interruption, emergency evacuation and repatriation is strongly recommended.

All wildlife is observed in its natural habitat. Although the region offers exceptional wildlife-viewing opportunities, sightings cannot be guaranteed.
