Roots of the Amazon at Posada Amazonas

A journey through living culture and the Peruvian rainforest

Located within a vast protected forest connected to the Tambopata National Reserve, Posada Amazonas offers an immersive encounter with the wildlife, landscapes and living culture of the Peruvian Amazon.

The lodge is owned by an Indigenous Amazonian community and represents an inspiring model of community-based ecotourism. Tourism helps support forest conservation, local employment, education and the preservation of ancestral knowledge.

Designed in harmony with its natural surroundings, Posada Amazonas features spacious wooden rooms with a private bathroom and an open wall overlooking the rainforest. This distinctive design allows guests to awaken to the sounds of tropical birds and monkeys while remaining comfortably immersed in nature.

During this four-day journey, travellers will explore the Amazon from different perspectives: from the heights of a canopy tower, the peaceful waters of an oxbow lake and forest trails filled with wildlife, medicinal plants and ancient trees. They will also discover how local knowledge, scientific research and responsible tourism contribute to protecting the rainforest.

Program Overview

This suggested four-day experience combines wildlife observation, rainforest exploration, traditional Amazonian knowledge and conservation.

Guests may select from the activities available at the lodge and personalise parts of the program according to their interests, preferred pace and physical condition. Excursions are organised in small groups and accompanied by knowledgeable naturalist guides.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 – Welcome to the Amazon

Upon arrival at Puerto Maldonado Airport, you will be welcomed by a representative and transferred to the local operations office. After a brief orientation, begin your journey to Posada Amazonas. Travel for approximately one hour by road through the Amazonian countryside before arriving at the port. From there, continue for about one hour by motorised boat along the Tambopata River. A light Amazonian lunch or snack will be served during the river journey as the city gradually disappears and the surrounding landscape becomes increasingly wild. Upon reaching the lodge’s riverbank, climb the riverside staircase and follow a short forest trail to Posada Amazonas. After a warm welcome and orientation, settle into your spacious room overlooking the rainforest. In the afternoon, walk through the forest to the approximately 42-metre-high canopy tower. A secure staircase leads to observation platforms above the treetops, providing panoramic views of the forest and the Tambopata River. Toucans, parrots, macaws and mixed flocks of canopy birds may be observed from this privileged viewpoint. Return to the lodge for dinner. Before or after dinner, attend an informative presentation about Amazonian biodiversity, scientific research or conservation initiatives in the region.

Day 2 – Oxbow Lake and Traditional Plant Knowledge

Begin the day early, when temperatures are cooler and rainforest wildlife is most active. Travel approximately 30 minutes by boat, followed by a guided walk of about 45 minutes, to reach Tres Chimbadas, a peaceful oxbow lake surrounded by protected rainforest. Explore the lake aboard a traditional catamaran while searching for its resident wildlife. With luck, you may observe giant river otters, black caimans, hoatzins, horned screamers, monkeys and a variety of aquatic and forest birds. Your guide will explain the ecology of the lake and the importance of protecting this delicate habitat. Return to the lodge for lunch and some time to rest. In the afternoon, visit the Ñape Ethnobotanical Center, an initiative dedicated to preserving and sharing traditional knowledge about Amazonian plants. Follow an interpretive trail and learn how selected forest plants have traditionally been used for medicine and everyday life. Before dinner, you may attend another presentation focusing on a different aspect of the Amazonian ecosystem. After dinner, join a guided night walk. Explore the forest in search of frogs, insects, spiders and other nocturnal creatures while discovering how the rainforest changes after sunset.

Day 3 – Parrot Clay Lick, Ancient Forest and Local Knowledge

Begin the morning with a visit to the nearby parrot clay lick. From a discreet observation hide located close to the riverbank, watch as parrots and parakeets gather to consume mineral-rich clay. The activity creates a colourful and energetic natural spectacle while offering excellent opportunities for birdwatching and nature photography. Your guide will explain the ecological importance of clay licks and help identify the different species observed. After breakfast, set out on a guided forest walk to an impressive ancient ceiba tree. Along the way, learn about the ecology and natural history of the rainforest while searching for monkeys, tropical birds, insects and signs of larger forest animals. Later, visit a local Amazonian farm where a wide variety of fruits, medicinal plants and traditional crops are cultivated. Learn how local families use the land and how many of these plants serve an important purpose in food, medicine, construction or daily life. Return to Posada Amazonas for some time to relax. After dinner, participate in the Discovering New Species experience. Meet members of the research team and learn how scientists study and document the extraordinary diversity of insects found in the rainforest. Guests may have the opportunity to assist with observing and identifying specimens attracted to a research light trap.

Day 4 – Farewell to the Amazon

After breakfast, prepare for the return journey to Puerto Maldonado. Walk back to the river and travel by motorised boat along the Tambopata River. Continue by road to Puerto Maldonado, where airport assistance will be provided for your onward flight. Your stay at Posada Amazonas contributes to the protection of the surrounding rainforest while supporting community-led tourism, scientific research and the preservation of Amazonian knowledge.
